Nga Tamariki a Tane - The Children of Tane Mahuta

In Māori mythology, Tāne Mahuta is the god of forests and of birds, and the son of Ranginui and Papatūanuku, the sky father and the earth mother. The image of Tāne is depicted in the background of each of the artworks and relates to his position as protector of our native taonga (treasures).

I believe that we all play a part in the protection of the environment so that our precious native birds and animals can survive for the enjoyment of all future generations. Tāne can no longer protect our precious taonga on his own and so therefore we need to take over some, if not all, the responsibility to restore the environment and get rid of the introduced pests so the birds and animals can survive.

I take my role as kaitiaki seriously and am active in predator trapping and restoration of the environment around the central plateau region. I have this year been given the opportunity to work at the Whio Hardening Facility at the National Trout Centre in Turangi. This has been an amazing opportunity to care for these taonga prior to their releases into the wild.
